Ciena: CatenaView
From Devwiki
Ciena makes transport and switching equipment (CoreStream, CoreDirector) that increases the capacity of long-distance fiber-optic networks by transmitting multiple light signals simultaneously over the same circuit. It also sells transport systems for metro and enterprise wide-area networks, as well as broadband access products that enable communications companies to deliver Internet protocol (IP) services, such as Voice over IP (VoIP), IP video, and DSL. Ciena serves telecom service providers, cable companies, large enterprises, and government entities.

[edit] The Project/Product
[edit] Project Background
Catena Networks selected Objectivity/DB for CatenaView. Ciena acquired Catena networks in 2004. They provide this capability to Verizon and BellSouth.
[edit] Project/Product Description
CatenaView EMS is a carrier-class Element Management System (EMS) for managing the voice, data, and video services of all Ciena Broadband Access Systems in the CNX-5 product family from a central remote location. Central operation greatly simplifies network management and reduces capital and operational costs. Remote service activation enables service providers to respond quickly to demands for broadband service.
CatenaView EMS provides full FCAPS and OAM&P functionality. An easy to use, standard GUI, template-based bulk provisioning or flow-through provisioning, and real time or pre-provisioning of components enable rapid service activation without the need for additional hardware or costly field service calls.
CatenaView EMS architecture scales easily to tens of thousands of managed lines and features multi-threading to provide concurrent processing of simultaneous network events.
- For small networks, the CatenaView EMS can be deployed in a standalone configuration, with the Central Server, Agent, and GUI Client installed on one platform.
- For larger or rapidly growing networks, the CatenaView EMS can be deployed in a distributed configuration with the three components installed on different platforms. Agents can be added to manage multiple networks.
Highlights:
- Deployed in all four RBOC networks
- Scalability targets:
- > 10,000 network elements
- > 2 million subscribers
- > 100 simultaneous users
- > Support standalone and distributed server configurations
- Database storage of incongruous data types:
- Object-oriented network element components
- Simple records such as
- Transaction / user logs
- Historical faults / alarms
